Bio of Marty Skeldon
Candidate for Toledo City Council District 5
Marty Skeldon is seeking the District 5 Toledo City Council seat that is being vacated by Ellen Grachek, who has decided not to run for re-election.
Skeldon is a veteran of the US Army where he was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. He has served on numerous boards and commissions; most recently he co-aired the Citizens Committee that looked into improving operations at the Toledo Zoo. He retired from the US Postal Service just six months ago to run for the District 5 seat. He has training in team building and conflict resolution, and served as Employee Involvement Coordinator with the USPS for six years.
If elected he will serve as a full-time Councilman. He has guaranteed that he will provide a rapid response to constituents concerns.
He believes that the many businesses in District 5 have the best potential for future job growth. He has demonstrated his skill in working with a local developer and City Council to cut the red tape so and entrepreneur could open a small business in the DeVeaux Shopping Center. He also believes strongly the importance of public safety and has pledged to keep the District Police Station open on Sylvania Avenue. He served on the Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities for eight years, three years as its president, overseeing 750 employees and a $55 million budget. He served on the Ottawa-Jermain Park Advisory Board, the Board of Community Relations and coached youth sports for many years including football, basketball, baseball and soccer.
Skeldon is one of eleven children and was raised in the Historic Old West End. His grandfather, Frank and his father, Phil were Directors of the Toledo Zoo for nearly 50 years, and his mother Bernadine was a bookkeeper and social justice advocate. He has been married for 34 years to his wife Mary Chris, and they have three adult children, Mark (Jennifer), Maureen, and John (Audrey). The Skeldons have two granddaughters. The three stars on his logo represent his three children who are with him throughout his campaign.
